STAR WARS IN PRAGUE: SAVE JAN BEDNAR

Jan Tamas and Jan Bednar have not eaten for 16 days. They are protesting against plans to install a new US military base in the Czech Republic, part of the Star Wars project. Jan Bednar's liver failure, is worsening and he is now under constant medical care.

Family, friends and his doctors hoped that the meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister Karel Schwarzenberg scheduled for tomorrow would lead the protesters to suspend their strike. Today a message of solidarity arrived from Socialdemocratic Secretary Jiri Paroubek, as well as a moving letter by Congressman Dennis Kucinich.

However, Jan Bednar stated, "These are only palliatives, even if moved by good intentions. Why such a hurry to sign the Treaty with the Bush administration a few months before it's over? This project is a historical turning point for our country. Therefore, why not open a clear and democratic debate and, eventually, pick up talks with the new US administration?"

Protests have spread from Prague to: Amsterdam, Bergamo, Berlin, Bologna, Bruxelles, Budapest, Byron Bay, České Budějovice, Česky Krumov, Brunswick, Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Ferrol, Florence, Koln, London, Malaga, Milan, New York, Paris, Toulouse, Trieste, Turin and Zurich

More than a 100.000 signatures on www.nonviolence.cz online petition.

Hundreds of organizations and personalities have sent solidarity messages such as: Noam Chomsky, Nobel Prize Winner Dario Fo, Giorgio Schultze, Giulietto Chiesa (European Parliament member), Luisa Morgantini (Vice President of the European Parliament), French bishop Jacques Gaillot and Pulitzer prize winner Chris Hedges.
